"Playing for the Wasatch Lacrosse Club was a unique opportunity for me. Having coaches who have played at high level and share a passion for the game allowed me to progress rapidly as a player. Every minute of every game has been filmed, analyzed, and used to increase my lacrosse IQ and gain knowledge of what I was doing right or wrong."

2016 Tri-State Trip Blog: July 5-12

  • Name:  Ian Elson

  • High School:  Riverton High School (Class of 2016)

  • What college/university will you attend?  Adams State University

  • What other schools did you consider?   I considered Southwestern University, Colorado Mesa University, Westminster College, Centre College, Notre Dame de Namur, and University of the Cumberlands, before signing my national letter of intent to play lacrosse for Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado.

  • What were the deciding factors that helped you choose the school you currently attend?  I like the smaller campus and class sizes.  I was able to meet with the head of the business department before I even applied for admissions.  I also like Colorado. I have the opportunity to go to school out of state, and since Adams State is in the RMAC conference, I will be able to play college games in Utah.  I also like the interactions I had with Coach Levesque.  I am really excited for the direction he is taking the program and am looking forward to being part of the team.

  • How did your interaction with the coaching staff begin? Did they see you play and contact you or did you send highlight film?  I filled out the recruiting questionnaire for Adams State University, on the schools lacrosse athletic page, and send them the link to my web page and highlight film.  I talked to the coach on multiple occasions and let him know what upcoming tournaments I would be playing.  The coach saw me play at the Adrenaline Challenge tournament in Del Mar, California.

  • What is it like to be a college lacrosse player?
  • What advice do you have for players who are aspiring to play lacrosse in college?  You need to continually work to improve your skills.  You can’t put your stick down at the end of the spring season. I learned a lot traveling and playing in tournaments out of state against really tough competition. When I considered playing in college, I learned that college coaches don’t go to tournaments to discover players. They are there to watch players who have reached out to them.  Do your research and contact the college coaches/schools you are interested in prior to the tournaments.

  • How has Wasatch LC helped you?  Playing for Wasatch has really helped build my confidence.  On our trip back east last July, we played several really good teams, winning the majority of our games.  It was great to realize that players from Utah can compete on the east coast.  My experience playing for Wasatch has also raised the level of my game.

  • What was the best part about playing for Wasatch LC?  The coaches saw my potential and worked to develop me as a player.  They have been very supportive and continue to give me advice even when I am playing on other teams. It is such a great atmosphere to travel with the coaches and players.

  • What is your most memorable experience from playing with Wasatch LC?  I can’t decide between playing in Vail against the Baltimore Crabs, and scoring a goal, or going to the championship game at the Tri-State tournament in Princeton, New Jersey.

  • Why should other players aspire to play for Wasatch LC?  It provides the opportunity to play and travel with some of the best players in Utah, and the coaches are great.  If you want to take your game to the next level, this program will provide you with the support and coaching to get you there.

  • Please add who you would like to thank:  I would like to thank my parents for all the time, money, and support they have provided over the past 12 years.   I’d like to thank my first lacrosse coach Rob Likes, Riverton Lacrosse coach Kyle Hardy, and Wasatch LC coaches Danny Larkin, Ricky Larkin, and Adam Eddinger.   I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of these great people.  Thank You!
